What Was I Thinking?

John Powers

How many times have we heard ourselves release words out of our mouths that we wish we would have never spoken. Something happened that stirred your emotions in a negative way. Something didn’t line up with your way of thinking and BAM, the trigger was pulled. Down the chamber of the wall of your mind and out of your mouth flew these deadly projectiles of destruction. It’s happened to all of us. What causes us to do that? Well, there’s a lot of reasons why we do, but what we need to focus on is a working solution that will help us keep our minds trained from doing this.

Today, you are going to have a solution to this problem that is an epidemic in the church. It’s hard to imagine that the place we are to go for refuge and help for our worldly ways is having the same problems as the world. And there is a reason why the Church is in this condition, but once again, there is a solution, and part of that solution is in today’s blog. This is a very serious matter, saints, which is why I am addressing this problem today.

Let’s take a look at what the word of God has to say about this problem. In Matthew 12:36,37 it reads: I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. The definition of careless is lack of forethought, thoughtless, unstudied, untrained, unthinking and unmindful. In the context in which it is spoken in these verses, it means wicked, injurious, malicious, and false words that had been spoken. Those who were in attendance when Jesus spoke that day were corrupt.

Idle words carry the penalty of judgment, and knowing this ahead of time is to be forewarned so we can be forearmed. We need to take action now to get our thinking in order. This can only happen when you practice or exercise your mind to get it in shape. You need to get your mind fit on the word of God so your mind, will and emotions will be able to handle the negative resistance that is confronting you at the moment. An untrained, weak mind will not be able to withstand the weightier challenges life and the enemy will throw at you.

You see, it all starts with our thinking. If you don’t get your thinking, or your thought life in shape, you will never get your talking, or how you respond verbally, correct. Sure, you can repeat what the word of God says to your circumstances, and you can get results, but you can still be all messed up in your thinking. And when your thinking is off, so is your confession. The next thing you know, you’re right back to shooting careless words out of your mouth. A basketball player may throw a ball up with a prayer at the end of a game and hit that buzzer-beater, but he will tell you that is not the way he wants to win. A solidly-played offense and defense is the way to win day in and day out. He’ll take that victory, but he knows that he cannot continue to play like that and win on the court.  It’s no different for us.

Well, bless God, Jesus is the answer to everything saints. Romans 12:2 gives us the solution to this problem. It says, be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Knowing how to apply this verse properly is key.
